Townsville Artist Stories, part 1: Emile Griffiths, Dr. Barbara Cheshire & Kayta Venter

Artgaze Magazine are proud to be collaborating with Townsville Artist Stories, to republish nine video interviews of artists local to Townsville, North Queensland. The project is the brain child of writer, educator and curator, Alex Christopher, funded by Townsville City Council and Arts Queensland through the Regional Arts Development Fund. The films were recorded and edited by Mia Peronis of Eyeswide Imaging.

Emile Griffiths: Electronic Music Artist

“Emile Griffiths creates atmospheric soundscapes and takes a technical approach using granular synthesis.

Emile uses organic sonic textures and mechanically made sound, which he manipulates digitally.
Emile performs live and has a full album available for free via on the hyperlink below. We filmed him here in his home studio in North Queensland in 2016. After which he made us delicious pumpkin soup and homemade bread.”

Dr. Barbara Cheshire: Illustrator & Painter

“Dr. Barbara Cheshire is a visual artist and educator who came to explore the practice in her 40s.

Barbara’s work explores the vicissitudes in life and happenings through conceptual principles and uses symbolism in her work.
Barbara has been awarded Winner of the Townsville 150th Celebration Portrait Award for her piece I Remember.”

Kayta Venter: Mixed Media Installation Artist

“Katya uses a variety of media in her artmaking including photography, digital drawing, focusing on the points of intersection between sculpture and video installations.

Her extensive travelling experiences have contributed to the themes she explores in artmaking.”
